Professor Dr. Mohammed Ataur Rahman is a distinguished academic and environmental expert, currently serving as the Chairman of the Department of Environmental Science and Director of the IUBAT Institute of SDG Studies (IISS) at IUBAT University. He is also the Chairperson of the Centre for Global Environmental Culture (CGEC) and the Program on Education for Sustainability at IUBAT. A specialist in Plantation Crops, Forestry, and Agriculture, Professor Rahman is the Coordinator of WWOOF Bangladesh. His teaching expertise spans Ecology, Crop Climatology, Environmental Science, Sustainable and Urban Agriculture, and Plant Physiology. Professor Rahman has contributed as a co- author alongside the late Professor M. Alimullah Miyan, Former Vice Chancellor and Lead Author of the IPCC Working Group II, and as a collaborator with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) on Disaster Management initiatives. He also holds the position of Executive Director and Coordinator for RCE Greater Dhaka, which is officially recognized by UNU- IAS.
Professor Rahman has received specialized training in Sustainability from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), USA, and participated in the UNESCO-UNFCCC Climate Change Education webinar series in 2023. In addition to his academic roles, Professor Rahman serves as Chief Consultant for Forestry, Environment, Plantation Crops, and Permaculture Consultancy and Research (FEPPCAR) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He brings 14 years of expertise in the Finlays Plantation Industry of Bangladesh, where he worked as Senior Manager for Forestry and Plantation Crops. His experience includes working with leading global brands in industries such as tea, timber, bamboo, rubber, canes, black pepper, and betel leaf. Professor Rahman possesses in-depth knowledge of tropical forest plant environments, particularly in the areas of tea, rubber, and non-timber forest crops. He is also proficient in plantation establishment and management, with expertise in crops such as tea, timber, coconut, bamboo, fruits, and spices. His specialization extends to forest resource exploitation and wood preservation techniques. Professor Rahman is deeply involved in multidisciplinary efforts related to eco-agriculture, organic farming, permaculture, and multi-strata cropping systems aimed at promoting sustainable rural livelihoods. His contributions to sustainable agriculture and development include working with the World Bank’s International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology (IAAST). Prior to his tenure at Finlays, Professor Rahman served for twelve years at the Bangladesh Forest Industries Development Corporation (BFIDC) and the Rural Electrification Board (REB), playing a significant role in the development of forest industries and timber products in Bangladesh. An accomplished author, Professor Rahman has written 12 books, booklets, and book chapters, with scientific articles regularly published in prominent English and Bengali newspapers, including The Daily Star, Bangladesh Observer, News Today, Financial Express, and Inquilab.
